Hello!
I’m Nick Coupland and I’m an artist and Illustrator based in Yorkshire just outside Hull.
I draw architecture in a classical pen & ink style with a contemporary twist, creating striking elevations and aspects in razor-sharp detail.
I have a particular fondness for post-war architecture, mainly Modernism and Brutalism. This style allows me to capture shade, texture and form in my illustrations…things this often maligned style has in abundance.
I love the clinical sharpness and cleanliness of pen and ink drawing, however i do sometimes work in acrylic or oil. This allows me to create contrasts in colour and capture elements not always possible in black and white.
My drawings have been used for a variety of projects, from architectural promotions to fashion designs and have been displayed in a number of locations from my native North down to London.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Been part of successful preservation campaigns and seen my illustrations used to help people celebrate a whole variety of special occasions, using architecture as the backdrop to friendships, marriages and to mark important milestones between work colleagues.
When I’m not roaming around concrete buildings with my sketchbook, you can find me dodging trees on my mountain bike with my Son, tapping my feet and nodding at gigs, making kitchen’s messy or hopelessly strumming my guitar pretending to be Jack White or J Mascis.
If you would like to chat about a forthcoming project (be it commercial or private) please don’t hesitate to send me a message in the contact box in the menu.
